Earlier this month, Sealed Air was honored to be a sponsor of the Sustainable Packaging Coalition’s annual conference in Charlotte.  The conference featured collaborative working sessions, presentations, tours, and networking activities. Key themes for this year’s event were setting sustainability strategy, the circular economy, and systems to enhance our industry's long-term resilience and ability to regenerate.   Attendees to the SPC conference included companies such as Pepsico, General Mills, Walmart, Chipolte, Target, McDonalds, UPS, Johnson & Johnson and Nike.

The Sustainable Packaging Coalition (SPC) is an industry working group dedicated to promoting the environmental and social benefits of packaging.  SPC is founded on supply chain collaborations and continuous improvement, using science-based approaches to advocate for packaging systems that encourage economic prosperity and a sustainable flow of materials.  SPC includes the following principles to define sustainable packaging:

  • Beneficial, safe & healthy for individuals and communities throughout its life cycle;
  • Meets market criteria for both performance and cost;
  • Optimizes the use of renewable or recycled source materials;
  • Is manufactured using clean production technologies and best practices;
  • Is made from materials healthy throughout the life cycle;
  • Is designed to optimize materials and energy;
  • Is effectively recovered and utilized in biological and/or industrial closed loop cycles.

The keynote address was entitled, “Embracing Sustainability as a Business Framework to Enhance Long-Term Shareholder Value”, which set the stage for Sealed Air to introduce our Better Way for Life Plan and 2020 Goals.  Dan Daggett, Executive Director of Sustainability of Sealed Air, presented the results of our materiality assessment and how stakeholder engagement was used to guide sustainability strategy.  SPC attendees were given a preview of how Sealed Air is making a Better Way for Life by driving operational efficiency in our operations, integrating sustainability into our products and solutions, and benefiting society.

Following the presentation, Nina Goodrich, Executive Director of the Sustainable Packaging Coalition, moderated a Q&A session where attendees inquired about the business value of Sealed Air’s sustainability commitments, the findings of our materiality assessment, and how a robust sustainability program can help avoid disastrous ethical and business consequences.  You can learn more about our materiality assessment by viewing our annual sustainability report at .
