Pachamamanchikta Waqaychasun (Let’s Take Care of Our Mother Earth) is the first radio drama created and produced entirely in Secclla, a small rural town in one of the poorest regions of Peru. The town just implemented a much-needed system of solid waste collection and established a mini-landfill to dispose of medical waste, which will ultimately reduce the incidence of parasitic infections and other diseases caused by poor trash disposal.

PCI-Media Impact was invited by our My Community program partner, Salud Sin Limitas, in February of 2010, to train local residents to develop a communications campaign to mobilize citizens to gladly use the new system and welcome the resulting health and social benefits. The team also trained a group of teenagers to produce and host a radio call-in show.

In addition, three local high schools hosted workshops about waste segregation and use of the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) at which dozens of children, adolescents and adults participated. Students were then able to replicate these practices in their homes.

“For us it is a thrill, I am happy to be able to participate in the radio broadcasts and community workshops,” said Ruth, 15.
