Jackson Family Wines Announces 2021 Sustainability Goals

Inaugural Jackson Family Responsibility Report Details Commitment to Leadership in Sustainability

Today California-based Jackson Family Wines shared its first sustainability report, supported by a list of comprehensive 5-year goals. The family-owned wine company, known for its portfolio of premium wineries with such beloved household names as Kendall-Jackson, La Crema and Cambria, is a progressive leader in environmentally and socially responsible business practices.     
 
“My family has long been at the forefront of responsible winegrowing with a decades-long commitment to environmental stewardship, innovation in energy and water management, and caring for our people and communities,” said Katie Jackson, Vice President of Sustainability and External Affairs at Jackson Family Wines. “Today’s wine consumers are passionate about sustainability and support wineries that share their values, so I am truly excited to reveal the details of our progress and our ambitious five-year goals in this inaugural report.”
 
Highlights of Jackson Family Wines’ progress since 2008 include:

  • Certification for all family-owned wineries and vineyards through third party sustainability programs: California Sustainable Winegrowing (CCSW), Sustainability in Practice (SIP), or Low Input Viticulture & Enology (LIVE)  
  • 31% reduction in winery water use
  • 6.5 megawatts of onsite solar PV systems deployed across 9 wineries, the wine industry’s largest solar portfolio
  • 8.4 megawatt hours of Tesla Powerpacks (stationary battery storage systems) installed onsite
  • 17% reduction in Scope 1- 3 market based greenhouse gas intensity
  • 98% of bottling line materials recycled annually
  • Support for more than 50 community-based non-profits working to build a better world

Jackson Family Wines’ approach to sustainability is rooted in the family’s multi-generational vision to make world-class wines while having a positive and lasting impact upon our natural resources, employees and communities. The 2021 goals outlined in the report will be measured against a calendar year 2015 baseline and include:

  • 25% reduction in market-based Scope 1-3 greenhouse gas emissions intensity
  • 33% reduction in winery water intensity
  • 50% offset of winemaking operations electricity usage from onsite renewables
  • 50% reduction in facility solid waste generation
  • 75% employee participation in annual community volunteer program
  • Achieve zero-waste tasting rooms
  • Pilot an innovative trial or continue an ongoing experimental pilot project each year
  • Commit to at least one land conservation or restoration project per year 

Jackson Family Wines won consecutive Top Project of the Year awards from Environmental Leader in 2015 and 2016, as well as the 2016 California Green Medal Leader Award for Sustainable Winegrowing. Jackson Family Wines was also named 2013 the drinks business Green Company of the Year, and was a recipient of an EPA Green Power Leadership Award in 2011.
