Hydro Ottawa's Sustainability - Molded by Pioneers

Oct 23, 2012 6:45 PM ET

While Hydro Ottawa has grown to be Ontario’s third-largest municipally-owned electricity distribution company, they have never lost touch with the community spirit imbued by pioneers such as Warren Y. Soper and Thomas Ahearn of the Ottawa Electric Light Company, a predecessor of Hydro Ottawa.

Ahearn, dubbed the ‘Edison of Canada’ was a prolific inventor who held 11 patents including one for the electric heater and another for the electric oven. Ahearn and Soper left an indelible mark on their community including building the country’s first water-powered electricity generating station at Chaudière Falls in 1882. It is a testament to them and the hundreds who have followed in their footsteps that generating facilities at Chaudière still operate and that Hydro Ottawa continues to reinvent its commitment to renewable generation capacity. They view their environmental determination as a commitment to ensuring the long-term viability and sustainability of their community. In the same spirit, Hydro Ottawa devotes great human energy and corporate commitment to the social fabric of the communities in which they operate.

As a community company that delivers essential services to Ottawa residents, contributing to the well-being of our community has always been a part of Hydro Ottawa’s core mandate. As such, we continue to be very active in our community benefiting the City’s quality of life. That is why we are so pleased to be sponsoring the 2012 CCSR Conference. We look forward to welcoming all delegates and sharing the stories of our energetic commitment to community.
