Washington, D.C., June 16, 2015 /3BL Media/ – June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month, and every 67 seconds, someone in the United States develops  Alzheimer’s, a progressive and fatal disease that gradually worsens over a number of years. Today, Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death in the country, with more than five million Americans living with it.

For people with Alzheimer’s, work becomes extremely difficult as the disease progresses, and eventually working is no longer an option. In addition, Alzheimer’s reaches beyond the individual with the disease – caregivers often face great emotional stress, financial difficulties, depression, lower productivity at work and a host of other issues.

To help employers and their employees manage and learn more about Alzheimer’s Disease, Community Health Charities is partnering with the Alzheimer’s Association to offer a 30-day Alzheimer’s awareness email program that provides a variety of resources for anyone affected by Alzheimer’s – all delivered straight to their work or home email inbox. Emails will include:

  • Interactive quiz
  • Links to webinars and podcasts
  • Support group locator
  • Three stages of Alzheimer’s
  • Support programs

“According to the Alzheimer’s Association, in 2014, friends and family provided an estimated 17.9 billion hours of unpaid care,” said Thomas G. Bognanno, President and CEO, Community Health Charities. “While younger-onset Alzheimer’s disease strikes before the age of 65 and therefore not likely to physically impact many Americans during their working years, it does impact the people around us at work who are providing care to someone with Alzheimer’s disease. Community Health Charities can deliver resources to make it easier for busy employees to have access to reliable information, services and programs in order to help those live more successfully with Alzheimer’s at work and at home.”

“Alzheimer’s is the only top 10 cause of death in America that cannot be prevented, slowed or cured,” said Angela Geiger, Chief Strategy Officer, Alzheimer’s Association. “By reaching employees with Community Health Charities, we can share  Alzheimer’s Association’s resources and  ensure families are getting the support they need and know  where to turn for resources, education and support groups.”
