Franklin Templeton's Employees in Poznan Help Create Smell Library

May 19, 2021 1:00 PM ET

Franklin Templeton employees in Poznan organized a used perfume bottle drive to supply and support a library of smells. The first of its kind in Poland, the library will open in 2022 at the Educational Centre for Blind Children to help the blind and visually impaired learn more about the world that surrounds them.

The Smell Library refers to a collection of fragrances of all kinds that is being built in basement of the 700-year-old building in Owinska, near Poznan. The organization has collected 3000 fragrances so far, including perfumes and smells such as burning wood, steam locomotive oil, tar from Caucasus mountains and more, all captured in small jars and boxes.

Employees in Franklin Templeton’s Poznan, Poland office collected and donated a total of 70 perfume bottles. More will be delivered from across the firm. Donors brought half used or empty bottles, but no fragrances were repeated. The collection drive was a simple but unique way for employees to  contribute to the local community.

The library will be open to visitors, along with the Spatial Orientation Park and the typhloacoustic laboratory and museum that are already operating at the center. The Spatial Orientation Park is the first facility in Poland and most likely the only one in Europe created to help the blind and visually impaired learn spatial orientation and navigate in traffic, including in urban areas. The typhloacoustic museum is a collection of devices used by the blind over the last several centuries, including maps, Braille tablets, and touch graphics.
