As a parent, teachable moments often come up in the most unexpected ways.

I was telling my 8-year-old about Mary Kay’s volunteer project at The North Texas Food Bank. She didn’t understand what we were doing there so I further explained that there are a lot of people around the world and even in Dallas who go hungry every day. She pressed further, asking why, her eyes filling up with tears. She couldn’t possibly understand someone not having access to food. I felt guilty for blowing her mind, wishing that I could keep her in a bubble. But I know as she gets older, the reality of the world and how she will personally make it a better place, will be an important conversation in our household.

After this conversation, I felt a responsibility to better understand the impact of this issue. Each and every day, there are 180,000 meals provided by the North Texas Food Bank across the city of Dallas. But I learned recently that more than 300,000 meals are needed and that there are more than 49 million Americans who live in food insecure households. Our local food bank even provides meals to many of the domestic violence shelters that Mary Kay supports.

What an honor to share my Saturday morning with nearly 120 Mary Kay friends and family members. We packed 20,000 meals including fresh produce, canned goods and other unperishable items. We even packed bags for supplemental school meals including milk, cereal, granola bars, fruit cups and trail mix. Check out pictures below from our volunteer day.

As Thanksgiving and the holiday season draws near tell us how you're giving back!
