Design the Recycled Guitar of your Dreams

Stephen McSwain decided to create a new breed of guitar that he likes to call "functional art." Each instrument is hand made, one at a time in his shop, and has unique characteristics that make it a highly collectible guitar or piece of art, depending on how you look at it.

It all began many years ago with a motor carving tool, some Exacto knives, artistic and musical aptitude passed along and nurtured by Mom and Dad McSwain, and a whole lot of patience and persistence. The first guitar body was purchased from a guitar parts supply company as a completely experimental piece. Stephen started carving faces into the wood and eventually ended up with the guitar that is now in the possession of Steve Vai. That was number 0001.

Realizing that the general construction of a guitar isn't rocket science... McSwain began amassing tools to build guitars from raw stock and started the lifelong journey of building a better beast. Instead of trying to mimic or copy the masters, he decided to make an amazing sounding/playing guitar while incorporating carving, metal work and unique inlays to individualize each guitar, using a variety of reclaimed items. He goes to scrap yards and finds old aircraft metal and gauges, shooting ranges for bullet shell casings, old wood that may have interesting history (ie. an old cabernet wine aging cask, old destroyed stage flooring), even bones, to give each guitar it's special individual mojo.

Many rockstars began to take notice of McSwain's unusual designs and started placing orders. Over the years, rockers like Slash, Tommy Lee, Tak Matsumoto of B'z, Ben Moody of We are The Fallen and Evanescence, Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains, Steve Vai, Vernon Reid of Living Colour, Jared Leto of 30 Seconds To Mars, Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols, George Lynch of Lynch Mob and Dokken, and many others have added at least one McSwain Guitar to their collections.

"The sky is the limit" is a phrase that is often heard around the McSwain Guitars shop. If a client comes in with a dream... McSwain will bring it to life in a guitar.
