Kids Innovate, Explore and Create in Free STEM Workshops in Verizon Stores
Verizon offers free Innovative Learning labs in 36 stores across the United States. It is part of the company’s commitment to invest $400 million from 2012 to 2023 to bring tech education programs to millions of students. The Verizon Innovative Learning labs offer technology-focused lessons created by Project Lead the Way (PLTW), a leading educational nonprofit that empowers students to develop and apply in-demand, transportable skills by exploring real-world challenges.

Los Angeles Middle School Enters a New Era of Innovative Learning
Daniel Webster Middle School in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) has just begun a transformation to a new era of learning. Last spring, the school won a nationwide contest, and ultimately was given the opportunity to take part in Verizon Innovative Learning, the signature program of the Verizon Foundation. This week, Daniel Webster got the first taste of what being a Verizon Innovative Learning school means, as students were treated to an immersive virtual reality field trip.

Verizon Innovative Learning Launches First Ever 5G EdTech Challenge
Verizon Innovative Learning, the signature program of the Verizon Foundation, announced the launch of the Verizon 5G EdTech Challenge in partnership with NYC Media Lab. The first of its kind nationwide challenge calls for EdTech nonprofits including enterprise organizations, start-ups, research groups and universities including Historically Black Colleges and Universities as well as Hispanic Serving Institutions to create powerful, transformative education solutions that leverage 5G connectivity to solve challenges in under-resourced middle schools throughout the U.S.

Now in its second summer at FIU, Verizon Innovative Learning motivates young men to a new confidence that carries into the school year, putting them on a path to build brighter futures. They are in a better position to change the outcomes of their own generation, and those that follow. When asked why they believe they can change the world, participants like Jonathan, British and Gideon all had the same response: “Because we can.”

Scientists, Inventors, Entrepreneurs: These Girls Are Ready to Show the World That STEM Isn’t Just a Boy Thing
The Verizon Innovative Learning program is in its second summer at Patrick Henry Community College in Martinsville, VA. It's one of 16 locations around the country focused on getting middle school girls in rural communities excited about careers in STEM. Between summer intensives, students meet monthly for field trips and to hone their skills. It’s all part of the Verizon Innovative Learning mission to provide free technology, free internet access and hands-on learning experiences to help underserved students get the education they deserve.

Verizon Employees Cheer on Middle School Students Heading Back to School
All across the U.S. this week, kids arriving for their first day of school are being met with cheers, applause and high fives. It’s part of a nationwide “Clap-In” given by Verizon employees to welcome students into Verizon Innovative Learning, a transformative program that gives a free tablet and internet access to every student and teacher, and provides extensive teacher training, support, and a unique, immersive curriculum.

Almost 20 years ago, Kevin Boles took his seventh graders on a field trip from Bristol Township, PA, to Harrisburg. When students drew recollections of what they learned, their pictures were eye opening. "Old Dogs" And New Tablets: Verizon Changes How Teachers Approach Tech
Teachers in 26 schools in eight states are in training with Verizon Innovative Learning, a program that harnesses the power of technology to transform learning. They’ll join 74 schools in 12 states already participating in the initiative, which gives free technology, free internet access and an innovative tech-based curriculum to under-resourced schools.

The Making IT Happen Award from the International Society for Technology in Education, which honors extraordinary commitment, leadership, courage and persistence in improving digital learning opportunities for students, recognizes Verizon’s work to provide free technology, access and innovative curricula to under-resourced schools across America. Program director Justina Nixon-Saintil shares some insight into the initiative that was honored with the award.
