Caring for Our Coast

In 2014, the CITGO Caring for our Coast initiative started as a yearlong series of projects focused on coastal conservation and restoration in remembrance Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Today, it has grown into a program to protect vulnerable coastal and inland habitats through educational and volunteer efforts.

CITGO Honored by Coastal Bend Bays Foundation
The CITGO Corpus Christi Refinery recently received the Industry Award at the 15th annual Conservation and Environmental Stewardship Awards Banquet at the American Bank Center. The Coastal Bend Bays Foundation presented the award to CITGO in recognition of the refinery’s efforts to reduce waste generation and air emissions.

CITGO Awards Grants for Restoration Programs in Celebration of National Estuaries Week
For the third year in a row, CITGO Petroleum Corporation has awarded eight grants to local government agencies and nonprofits in celebration of National Estuaries Week, which took place Sept. 16-23. Through a partnership between CITGO and Restore America’s Estuaries (RAE), each grant will fund the organization’s restoration programs, environmental clean-ups, tree plantings and educational events.

CITGO Renews Its Commitment as Official Fuel Sponsor of First Response Team of America
CITGO renewed its Official Fuel Sponsorship of First Response Team of America, helping the organization support communities across the country in the crucial moments immediately following natural disasters. As Official Fuel Sponsor, CITGO will help First Response Team purchase the fuel they need to help communities struggling in the aftermath of a catastrophe.

Local Students, CITGO Volunteers Join Forces in 41st Street Beach Cleanup in Chicago
For the third consecutive year, in conjunction with the Chicago Parks Foundation and the Alliance for the Great Lakes, CITGO sponsored a Mid-Coast Cleanup as a part of its Caring for Our Coast initiative. Earlier this fall, students from King College Prep and the Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences joined volunteers from the CITGO Lemont Refinery for a cleanup project at the 41st Street Beach in Chicago. In a one-mile area, the group collected 94.9 pounds of trash in just a few hours. The most abundant items picked up were cigarette butts and plastic water bottles.

For the third year, CITGO Petroleum Corporation and the Ocean Exploration Trust (OET) are providing teachers and students with unique educational opportunities in the eastern Pacific Ocean.

TeamCITGO Enhances Natural Habitats and Environmental Education at the Oso Bay Wetlands Preserve in Corpus Christi
Volunteers from the CITGO Corpus Christi Refinery and local students came together for a beach cleanup at the Oso Bay Wetlands Preserve and Learning Center, a 162-acre natural sanctuary maintained by the Corpus Christi Parks and Recreation Department. Students from Cunningham Middle School and Foy H. Moody High School worked with TeamCITGO, an employee-run community service group, to clear the beach of trash and plant native vegetation. Afterwards, experts provided students with an opportunity to learn more about environmental conservation at the preserve.

CITGO and Artist Boat Restore Vital Coastal Heritage Preserve in Southeast Texas
As part of its ongoing commitment to environmental conservation and restoration, under its Caring for Our Coast program, CITGO Petroleum Corporation partnered with preservation organization Artist Boat to host a volunteer workday at the Coastal Heritage Preserve in Galveston. TeamCITGO volunteers helped Artist Boat staff plant native prairie vegetation, treated sections of the preserve for invasive fire ants and learned about the habitats and wildlife of the preserve.

CITGO Chesapeake Terminal Recognized by The Elizabeth River Project for More Than a Decade of Environmental Restoration Projects
In recognition of its continuing efforts to revitalize the Elizabeth River in Southern Virginia, the CITGO Chesapeake Terminal received its fourth Sustained Distinguished Performance Award this year from The Elizabeth River Project, a nonprofit that leads community environmental restoration efforts along the River.
