CONTENT: Press Release

Hello, I’m Emily Polk, and these are your CSR Minute headlines for Wednesday, May 5th:

The editors of the Canada’s Top 100 Employers project have announced that country’s Greenest Employers list. 50 Canadian companies and organizations were recognized, including some of Canada’s best known such as the Research in Motion, the Royal Bank of Canada, and McGill University’s Health Center. Other winners included less familiar organizations with innovative environmental initiatives, such as New Flyer Industries Canada and Rescan Environmental Services. Now in its third year, the Canada’s Greenest Employers competition includes detailed reasons for selection of the winners, outlining hundreds of eco-friendly ideas that employers have put into place.

FIGS, a California-based maker of ties and bow ties, has started a program to donate a school uniform to an African child for each purchase made on its Web site. In Africa, a proper uniform is a requirement for attending school, and those who can not afford one often go uneducated. FIGS is focusing on providing uniforms to needy children in  105 schools in Kenya and Tanzania. The company was assisted in developing the campaign by Ammado, an online network that connects socially engaged companies, individuals, and non-profits in forming active communities.
