General Motors received more clean-energy patents last year than any other organization, according to the Clean Energy Patent Growth Index. GM’s 135 patents in this category represent 14 percent of the total of 1,881 received by 700 entities. The patents covered hybrid electric vehicles, fuel cells and solar energy, and improvements to current and future technologies. The Clean Energy Patent Growth index tracks the granting of U.S. patents in all forms of clean, renewable energy.
The International Data Corporation has released its second ICT Sustainability Index. The Index scores G-20 countries on their reduction of carbon emissions through the use of Information and Communication Technologies—ICT. The rankings show that Japan continues to lead the rankings with a significant margin over the U.S., France, German, Brazil, and the United Kingdom. IDC notes that economic difficulties limited the impact of ICT investments in the 2010 Index Scores. Russia and South Africa were the only countries to improve their scores over 2009 results.
