At Mars Canada’s Bolton headquarters, the company has taken extra measures to ensure that its Associates are comfortable bringing their pets to work, as its own research suggests that this is important for wellbeing. Mars initially encouraged employees to bring their pets to work three years ago, when it established an outdoor “doggie courtyard”, and it now provides free dog treats and special indoor facilities.

“In a lot of research that we’ve done, we know that the relationship between pet and owner is really important and we’re really focused as a business on wellbeing,” said company spokeswoman Leslie Brams-Baker, whose poodle and Shih Tzu often accompany her to work. Speaking to the Toronto Star Leslie describes how the pet-friendly office can act as a stress reducer for both the pets and their owners.

“It also creates a really fun work environment. You find that you end up connecting with people you wouldn’t normally connect with in the office.”

Mars' pet-friendly office culture was specifically called out at the beginning of the year when the company was recognized in the list of Fortune's 100 Best Companies to Work For. The company has since been recognized as one of the World’s Best Multinational Workplaces by Great Place to Work®, the world’s largest annual study of workplace excellence which identifies the top 25 best multinationals in terms of workplace culture.
