Hurricane Dorian was the most powerful tropical cyclone on record to strike the Bahamas, causing catastrophic damage, leaving more than 70,000 people and pets homeless.

Hundreds of pets have been evacuated from the Bahamas until they can be reunited with their owners. During this time, dogs and cats are being cared for by several pet rescue organizations that are supported by Feeding America member, Treasure Coast Food Bank, in Fort Pierce, Florida.

When Feeding America asked Blue Buffalo for support, the pet food company generously agreed to donate a truckload (38,000 pounds) of dog and cat food and treats to help the pets impacted by Hurricane Dorian.

“This is an exciting milestone moment,” said Nicola Dixon, Executive Director of the General Mills Foundation. “While Blue Buffalo has a history of donating to animal shelters, this is the first time Blue Buffalo has partnered with Feeding America to distribute a large pet food donation to food banks serving families and their pets during this time of extreme need.”

“When a disaster like Hurricane Dorian strikes, people are impacted as well as pets,” said Karen Hanner, Vice President of Manufacturing Product Sourcing for Feeding America. “Feeding America is thankful for the support of General Mills and its Blue Buffalo brand for providing a truckload of pet food to our member, Treasure Coast Food Bank. This food bank and its community are coming to the aid of pets from the Bahamas who are waiting to be reunited with their owners. We are grateful to Blue Buffalo for its generosity and compassion for our four-legged friends.”

“At Blue Buffalo, we recognize the importance of getting high quality pet food to displaced dogs and cats in the wake of a natural disaster,” said Phil Cheevers, Vice President of Communications for Blue Buffalo. “Partnering with Feeding America has helped us to respond to the disaster and get much-needed pet food to animal rescue organizations and pet parents in a unique new way.”
