This week, July 10-14, Avnet and Chandler, AZ-based youth organization ICAN are hosting a week-long camp to introduce elementary and junior high school-aged girls in the community to the benefits of pursuing education and careers in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).

Taking inspiration from the real-life story of the women featured in the motion picture “Hidden Figures,” the program will give campers the opportunity to participate in a range of STEM-related activities, including coding with Python, Scratch and Blocky; learning the basics of computer science through projects based on Raspberry Pi and working with Makey Makey board, an electronic invention tool that allows users to connect everyday objects to computer programs.

ICAN is a free, family-centered youth service in Arizona’s East Valley that provides programs designed to help at-risk youth achieve personal and academic success by teaching them the critical skills they need to be productive and responsible members of the community.
