Active-duty Military Spouse Shares Her Home Depot Story

During Military Appreciation Month, we’re honored to spotlight the brave service members and military family members who bring their expertise, knowledge and dedication into our workplace. Their stories reflect the company’s core values of community and respect.

Amber’s journey with Home Depot started long before she became a full-time associate. When she was younger, she spent summers doing projects around her dad’s house, frequenting the store for supplies. Now an employee of seven years and an active-duty Navy spouse, Amber reflects on the ways The Home Depot has supported her and her family.

“Store-to-store transfers have helped me a lot,” says Amber. For most active-duty families, moving every few years from military base to base is simply part of the job.

A new Home Depot team has been there to welcome Amber all three times that she and her family relocated. During those moves, she’s also been in many different roles ranging from cashier to department head.

Another Home Depot benefit for military spouses is intermittent leave, which affords transitioning service members and military spouses paid time off outside of personal and sick time.

“Intermittent leave gives military spouses security that they can be there for their family when needed,” Amber says. “It helps especially for when my daughter gets sick, or if my husband’s hours change last minute.”

But even more important to Amber than job flexibility is having people she can count on.

“I like the people,” she says. “I have had a couple of things happen during my time here, and the way my team reached out and made sure my family and I were okay really made me appreciate working for Home Depot.”

The Home Depot is proud to employ more than 35,000 veterans and military spouses throughout the company. If you’re a veteran or military spouse looking for career opportunities at The Home Depot, visit www.careers.homedepot.com/military
